National Pile Croppers is proud to play a key role in one of the UK’s most significant industrial developments — the €4.6B Agratas EV Giga Battery Factory in Bridgwater, Somerset.
This state‑of‑the‑art facility, being delivered by Agratas, the global battery division of the Tata Group, will produce high‑performance, sustainable battery solutions for the automotive, mobility, and energy storage sectors. Once operational in 2027, the factory will have the capacity to manufacture 40GWh of battery cells annually, enough to power approximately 500,000 passenger vehicles, and will supply over 40% of the UK domestic market.
Meeting the Demands of a Mega Project
The scale of construction for the gigafactory is immense, with 17,000 concrete piles required to stabilise the foundations of Building One and other structures on the site. Each pile varies in size and specification depending on its application, making efficiency and precision critical to the programme's success.
With a demanding schedule and the need for round‑the‑clock productivity, contractors turned to National Pile Croppers for our expertise, equipment range, and 24/7 technical support. We were engaged directly by sub‑contractor Balfour Beatty, working via Synergy Plant and Toureen Plant, to deliver and maintain a large fleet of cropping solutions tailored for the project.
Our Equipment in Action
To date, piles cropped at the site have included 275mm pre‑cast concrete piles, installed across a piling mat measuring approximately 1,000m x 750m for Building One. Equipment deployed includes:
- Power Croppers
- Multi Bar Croppers
- PC400 Units
Synergy Plant has been operating NPC’s Power Croppers, while Toureen Plant has deployed six Power Croppers alongside two Multi Bar units and a PC400. These machines are operating continuously to meet high-volume crop targets.
Innovating for Tight Spaces
The unique layout of the pile configurations presented a challenge: in some areas, the piles were installed with minimal spacing. To address this, NPC’s engineering team designed a groundbreaking “nibbling” solution that allows contractors to strategically remove concrete before cropping. This method enhances safety, boosts productivity, and allows access in areas where traditional methods would be less effective.
Looking Ahead
Work will continue well into 2025 and 2026, with cropping on Building One followed by groundworks and pile preparation for Building Two. NPC’s combination of manufacturing excellence, innovative engineering, and 24/7 customer support ensures we are ready to meet the precise demands of this landmark development.
Managing Director Simon Price commented:
“Our role in the Agratas Gigafactory is a great example of what NPC stands for — delivering best‑in‑class equipment, backed by expertise and service that keeps projects moving. Cropping 17,000 piles is no small task, but with the right solutions and partnership, it’s achievable on time and to the highest standard.”
National Pile Croppers is proud to support the UK’s move towards sustainable mobility and energy solutions, ensuring the foundation work for this giga‑project is completed safely, efficiently, and on schedule.
