National Pile Croppers Supports Historic York City Centre Development
National Pile Croppers is currently supporting groundworks contractor Alwoodley Civils on a challenging and historically significant development in the heart of York, where a new boutique hotel is being constructed while preserving the original 1920s façade of the existing building.
Located on Piccadilly in the city centre, the project presents a number of unique challenges. As well as the preservation of the former hotel frontage, the site contains walls dating back to Roman times, requiring careful management throughout the construction process to protect the archaeology beneath.
Equipment Selected for a Restricted Working Environment
Alwoodley Civils, which is responsible for all groundworks up to foundation level, has once again partnered with National Pile Croppers to provide specialist equipment and technical support. Following site visits and detailed assessments, two machines from the NPC fleet were selected for the project: the Quad cropper and the CFA cropper.
The development involves the cropping of 350mm concrete piles within a highly restricted working environment. The Quad cropper was chosen for its compact footprint and its ability to operate effectively in confined spaces, while the CFA cropper provides additional flexibility through its modular design, which allows it to be adjusted for different pile diameters on site.
Scott Fitchett, Sales Director at National Pile Croppers, highlighted the productivity and safety benefits of the Quad cropper, which uses a synchronised hydraulic system and is able to safely retain the cropped concrete section during operation.
Efficient Progress in a Sensitive Location
Despite the constraints of the city centre location and the requirement to protect historically significant remains, pile cropping has been progressing efficiently. Between 10 and 15 piles are being completed each day, with National Pile Croppers providing on-site support throughout to help Alwoodley Civils deliver the works safely and on programme.
Groundworks are expected to be completed by August 2026. The finished development will combine modern hotel facilities with an important piece of York's architectural and Roman heritage.
This project is a further example of how specialist pile cropping equipment from National Pile Croppers can be deployed effectively on complex, space-restricted sites across the UK. To find out more about our equipment and how we can support your next project, get in touch with the team.
