NPC Provides Pile Cropping Expertise for Amey Sir Robert McAlpine A533 Bridge Project

The Problem:

Replacement of the ageing 70m span A533 bridge over the M56 required the cropping of multiple large-diameter concrete piles within constrained working areas, including central reservation zones.

Our Solution:

NPC deployed a modular CFA hydraulic cropper with adaptable design, allowing on-site size adjustments of 100mm increments and minimising restrictions with a dedicated lifting frame.

Project Impact:

Successful delivery within an eight-week cropping window, maintaining programme timelines and ensuring bridge replacement stayed on schedule.

Project focus

Precision Pile Cropping in Restricted Access Zones

Utilised a custom-designed CFA modular cropper with adaptive on-site modifications to navigate severe access constraints. Delivered accurate, safe cropping of large-diameter piles within tight structural frames, completing works on schedule and supporting the smooth delivery of the A533 bridge replacement.

The Challenge

The ageing A533 Expressway bridge needed replacement to maintain a vital link between Runcorn, Preston Brook, and Northwich. The works demanded cropping of 62 bearing piles (1,200mm diameter, CH35/45 grade, 10.42m cage length) within varied structural zones including abutments, wing walls, and a central pier. The most challenging 14 piles were located within a braced frame in the central reservation, creating severe physical access limitations.

Our Approach

  • Specialist Equipment Deployment:
Delivered and operated NPC’s in-house designed CFA modular cropper, capable of cropping 300mm–1,200mm diameter piles.
  • On-site Adaptability:
Removed cylinders from CFA links to navigate structural braces and accurately position the cropper over piles.
  • Efficient Task Execution:
Used bespoke lifting frame to minimise operational restrictions and improve safety.

The Result

  • Cropping completed within the planned eight-week programme.
  • Maintained programme alignment for bridge construction and traffic transfer.
  • Positive feedback from AmeySRM’s delivery director and construction manager on NPC’s service quality and cooperation.

Project Benefits

  • Seamless integration of pile cropping into overall bridge replacement plan.
  • Avoidance of costly delays through rapid problem-solving in constrained areas.
  • Strengthened working relationships with AmeySRM for future projects.
